Are you talking about Notifications underneath where it says "Welcome rjlockhart37" and it has a number next to it?

If so, those are notification of private messages/friend requests/photo messages etc.. If you click on it, you should get a dropdown showing what the notifications are telling you are there.

Once you have gone through your notifications, you will no longer see "Notifications" there and it will show what your Mood is.
