I'm an attorney and I have a degree in psychology. I've been disabled since 2006 and the likelihood of my returning to work is nearly nonexistent. I still maintain my license to practice law and if asked "what I do for a living" I say I am an attorney but not practicing law. If people inquire further, I am tell them I am retired or financially independent. It is common social culture in the United States to ask a person what one "does for a living" - I don't take offense. But I commensurate with you all that I prefer not to be asked what I "do"!
