I think that adding another destructive coping method on top of what you already have usually tends to just build up. I have tried to substitute one another, and I just end up doing more, and still needing to pick up the one I was trying to quit.
Eating disorders are hard to overcome, but just as with SI, what you really need to do is address your emotions and problems in living your life so that you can cope more effectively. SI just helps you to bury the feelings a little bit deeper, and makes it harder to work through it later on.
