Hi there Girls & Boys n 'others'! So...............whats this new(?) type of eating disorder? Before you quickly bail out thinking that it's yet another plug on teenage anorexia/bulimia - serious as they are of course, but they've had a great deal of press coverage. Orthorexia is basically under the umbrella of EDNOS (eating disorders not otherwise specified). It's been adopted by an older more 'health conscios' body of people, interestingly more often than not males. It starts of as wanting to eat more 'healthily', or 'clean' as some say. Keeping down fats, carbs, processed and unpure food groups. Often it's combined with heavy exercise regimes, hence of interest to males. This can lead to gradually cutting down, and eventually cutting OUT, anything that's considered by the person (called a sufferer by now) bad and unpure. There becomes a huge nutritional deficit which can lead to various depletions and even illnesses, of which the sufferer is unaware, mainly because they have a fixation on their 'righteous' eating. The first person to have experienced this was actually an MD - a Dr. This is not yet included in the DSM 5 (the guide that consultants use to define and diagnose categories & criteria of mental disoders/illnesses). However, because a 'sufferer' doesn't often become emaciated or apparently 'ill', it can easily go on for years. The sad part is that this regime cuts out all social events, severs friendships and devides families. Has anybody any comments?
