I got this from a blog on mercola.com. There are lots of articles.
"It’s important to realize that you have neurons both in your brain and your gut -- including neurons that produce neurotransmitters like serotonin. In fact, the greatest concentration of serotonin, which is involved in mood control, depression and aggression, is found in your intestines, not your brain! Perhaps this is one reason why antidepressants, which raise serotonin levels in your brain, are often ineffective in treating depression, whereas proper dietary changes often help..."

This research is so new I don't think they have even begun to tap into which microbes affect which moods. In fact I believe adding a probiotic supplement is a good treatment if you can't or don't want to change your diet. There are so many bacteria and microbes to research I am not buying probiotic supplements as a "cure all". The good news is everyone agrees that a balanced diet is the best way to help your diet. Foods are the best way to improve your entire gut whether your problem is probiotic or not. The article above talks about this.
Why is that important? You don't have to believe to benefit or stop your meds. You can change your intake of foods >for life< without risk of adversely affecting your health. Gaps, price Weston, paleo, nourished traditions. Whatever you prefer as long as it contains variety.
There is also lots of anecdotal evidence going back much longer than the new research. Often that's how studies get started by the way:

I should note that when nourished kitchen wrote that story several years ago she did not emphasize fermented food. She and the mercola article both talk about fermented foods as beneficial to mental health. I hope we see more fermented foods that you don't have to cook yourself.
I will acknowledge that it is not easy to change your diet like this because it takes more time to cook, healthy and antibiotic foods are more expensive and we are faced with bad choices everyday. But it is a healthier, more permanent solution than meds alone.
