I might have been lacking something I might have wanted as a kid, but that's not just my parents' fault. I think I was an odd, not very pleasant child.

Channelling my T for a moment to say there is no such thing as a "not very pleasant child". There are just kids who have different emotional needs that some adults may be better equipped to fulfill than others.
