I believe you can, depending on how you interact (Skype etc) but I do think there is a danger of falling in love with the idea of someone rather than the person themselves.

It is so easy for anyone to write what they want and convey what they want, which is why I think it's vital you do a lot of video chats etc. Body language and facial expressions give away sooo much and can change the whole feeling of a conversation.
