It's really hard to understand depression when you're on the outside looking in.
He's probably frustrated and sad, too, because if he's like me, he wants to be able to help you and he can't. It's a very helpless feeling watching someone you love live in pain without being able to help, or really understand.
Please point him to some resources where he can learn more about depression. "How you can survive when they're depressed" and "Depression Fallout" by Anne Sheffield are two good ones.
He can't fix your depression for you, but he can learn to manage his own understanding so that he doesn't exacerbate it by making statements out of frustration like "you shouldn't be depressed".
