Sometimes blood clots in the legs never do away. Here is a link with a good explanation. This happened to my brother-in-law. He has some chronic swelling in the affected leg. He took Coumadin (which does not dissolve the clot - see link) for six months but is off it now. It was thought he got a clot due to a previous fracture in that leg that caused some deviation in the blood flow.
