All I know is that gabapentin is not making it worse. Some Parkinson drugs that are used to treat RLS can backfire after long term use, but not gabapentin - have you tried it?
I don't have RLS, but I get akathisia easily, even on drugs that normally do not produce Akathisia. For that reason, I stayed away from Abilify (25% incidence of akathisia), because my pdoc friend told me that with my strong propensity towards akathisia, I would definitely get it on Abilify.
Last time I got akathisia on a transatlantic flight strapped in a window seat. So much fun!
I definitely sympathize with your plight.
