I became aware of the "decaf" thing as I became aware how sensitive I was to caffiene. Even decaf keeps me awake, which I think is partly due to expectation but not totally, I think the expectation is amplifying the effect of the lessor amount of caf in decaf.

Do you have any data about current data on the amount of caf with modern decaf techniques? I remember researching back when Sanka was all the rage... the label posted "97% caffiene free" and that was severely misleading, because it meant that only three percent of the "material" in the cup was caffiene and of course regular coffee isn't 100% caffiene... most of it is water of course and other things that make it "coffee" including the caffiene. So the number on the label seemed to imply that it had 97% less caffiene than regular coffee... in truth Sanka had about half the caffiene of regular coffee. A big difference but certainly not "caffiene free".

I would imagine modern methods do a better job of removing caffiene but I don't know how much is left in a modern cup of decaf.

I stay away from all soda, tea, soda, diet soda (yuk) etc. Sugar is my big problem. I still drink root beer (but not Barq's... that has caffiene added...) and some other sugar drinks. Unfortunately I have a difficult time drinking straight water.
