I was diagnosed bipolar 1 at age 43 but had difficulty finding anything in the literature to describe me. My main symptom outwardly was hypersexuality however I had a few other symptoms, short sleep, goal oriented activity. What clicked for my dx was my activities and the two manic and two depressed phases he saw in one year. But in all my years I had never been in trouble with the law, not even a speeding ticket, I'd never been hospitalised, I never was on drugs or alcohol. No wild spending sprees.
A book I found helpful was Bipolar Demysyified by Lana Castle, her description fit me better. Hope this helps.
