I tried collecting stats at one point. I used an excel spreadsheet. It helped initially because it would instantly tabulate calories, carbs, proteins, etc for me, so I could quickly see the pitfalls and where my strengths were. However, after a time it became tedious and once I learned what was what I found I no longer needed it. I have a better feel for it now to know what helps and what doesn't though I don't always like to admit it when I slip, I do actually know.

It can be a good tool though when starting out to figure out portion sizes and counting to keep as a journal, and to analyze for changes as time goes on.
