Public housing, and section 8 take 30% of your income for housing. You have to go to your local housing authority to be put on the list. It took us 3 months to get in to public housing and 6 months to get section 8. We are currently on the waiting list for a new area we're number 547 and our estimated wait time is 5 yrs. So it really varies.

I would put in applications to any county or city you are willing to move to. Are you receiving food stamps?
