There's a "Go Advanced" control when you write VMs just like the one for writing posts:
In "advanced mode" you get access to the same selection of smilies as with posts:
As gayleggg said, if you learn the code for some of your favorite smilies you can type it into your post without even using the toolbar. For instance, typing
:cool: gives you
