There are three main types of mood stabilizers: antipsychotics, lithium, and anticonvulsants. If you have a problem with depression in bipolar, antidepressants can be used in conjunction with a mood stabilizer. Using ADs alone can cause mania and rapid cycling so that's not recommended.
Antipsychotics are especially helpful for people who have bipolar with psychotic features. I don't think they do much for bipolar depression, but I'd have to check with that. The dosages for APs are usually less compared to schizophrenia when used for bipolar. I took lithium to help with depression, and it helped even though I'm not really bipolar. Don't know much about the use of anticonvulsants though.
