simon, this is a hard one to reply to, as i have stole from shops and i have been caught .
but here goes , i think you are a brave man to even want to go back to that shop. if you want this job so much i guess you have nothing to lose by going there and if its the old owners try and explain to them that you were foolish and you were down at the time , the worse they can say is no,
and if there are new owners, i would also explain to them what happened, because if they find out by someone else , there trust in you would be gone.
