I totally see where you're coming from. You really love him and don't wish for him to be in pain.

It's good you're trying to see things from his perspective. Understand that what he's doing is trying to recreate a time in his life when things were less painful for him. He's aware things at that time weren't perfect, but what's important to him is that life was much better than it is now.

If you don't mind me asking, is your son in therapy? It sounds like he's going through a lot and professional support may help him navigate better.
