If you are nervous about doing it over the phone, you may be able to schedule an interview in person [i actually don't see why not if you feel this would serve you better and you would be able to attend such an interview]- I would call your local SSA and ask. Since you recently recieved notice I can't imagine it would be a big issue to schedule if you call to inquire soon.
Also, ask what the meeting/interview is regarding and if you should have any information with you.
It isn't a trick- they won't schedule you in, say June, and then send you a notice revoking your benefits because they originally said you had to have it by mid may.
You can ask what you should have prepared and details about the interview, they won't think you sneaky and they won't be sneaky about it.
