Psychiatrists make mistakes or fail to recognize the patient's descriptions of their symptoms. For over a decade, I had the sole diagnosis of chronic clinical depression, but it wasn't until I had my first thorough psychiatric evaluation by a different psychiatrist, that the truth came out (i.e. type 1 bipolar disorder). Now, many years later, an entirely new pdoc has added the diagnosis of dissociative identity disorder (formerly: multiple personality disorder). So, you ask if you can have BP? Certainly it's possible - and where you mention your relatives with this illness, the probability of your inheriting this delightful condition is many magnitudes higher. So, it certainly deserves further investigation, and a second opinion never hurts.
