I've recently been through a similar episode (the irritibility was severe..) and am also only on antidepressants (I've been off Seroquel for a while - which was a stupid decision). My friend who has BP II is on Sodium Valproate (Epilim) for it, which is actually used to treat Epilepsy by preventing excessive electric activity in the brain, but is now also used to treat the manic side of bipolar. She's been on it for 15+ years and has no side effects. I'm going to talk to my pdoc about it next week and see what he thinks. Just thought you might want to look into it if you are afraid to try a mood stabiliser/antipsychotic per se. Although, Seroquel helped me a lot, just knocked me out pretty fast and made me feel a bit zombielike. Everyone is different though!
