If you're interested you should look into doing a summer internship with a biotech company. Maybe you could talk to your campus careers office about it?
I've never worked with antibiotics myself, cancer and cardiac drugs mostly. To do the really cool stuff you need a postgraduate degree too. Sigh. One day...
