I had a cut like that a while ago. I didn't get stitches because I was trying to hide it and I ended up with a fat, ugly scar. I'm sure stitches would have made the scar thinner and less noticeable. Are there bandaids that hold the skin together instead of just covering it up? If so, those might help reduce the scar.
