i just scratch the ground, cut them up and put them sprout side up.....cover with a little dirt and hay and water them. as they sprout, cover a little more and water.........then you just pick that plant up on around June 15 and have the most beautiful red potatoes.......
you buy "seed potatoes" as they haven't been treated chemically...like the potatoes that the stores sell are.......you must have a little "eye" on every piece that you plant.it's the little red "bud" and that is what sprouts....the piece has to have that on it....... usually you would end up quartering one potato.
your planting and harvesting time will be different in Kansas. check your almanac....
