When someone uses the wrong pronoun, I usually just correct them, but if they keep doing it I start to feel uncomfortable. After awhile I start to question myself and who I am. It's probably my Anxiety talking, so that's why it bothers me. And 'they' is very strange singularly, yes, but no matter how off someone elses pronoun can sound, I always try to get it right and rmember because I assume it feels the same to others as it does to me to be misgendered. I don't blame anyone for not liking 'they', heck, I like xe way better. But it's harder to get cis and binary people to use xe. So they is a pretty good fall back.
And yeah, 'it' is for inanimate objects, not living things. Can't stand when people use it, especially with people. The lamp is an 'it', the dog is a she, and I am a xe.
