I lent a tuner to a girl 2.5 months ago, and she treated me like a second-rate stranger. Fortunately, that situation is being dealt with. ^^ Back to the post, staying who you are is important. Your individuality shouldn't be tampered with by other people, and if you aren't pleased with yourself just make a change that will improve your characte, however that will be easy for you. If you feel like you're becoming a burden to someone, than it's best to lighten up the load. The bad thing is that with my friends, I seem too nice and an underdog to them, so I sometimes have to give them no attention or enthusiasm to show that I'm not totally close with them in a way that they'll undermine me.
