It is great you are getting help for your mental health issues. Chances are you have been self medicating. If you continue to abuse substances it makes treatment of mental illness difficult even though that is how we ourselves treated it. I actually believe I successfully treated my mental illness with drugs and alcohol for a number of years. Of course in the long run it did not work and made everything in my life much much worse including the mental illness. I reached out for help for my depression before I got clean and sober but I really had to get clean and sober or it was all going to hell. It already had. I went to a 30 day treatment center and then AA and NA. It worked for me and I have been clean and sober 19 years.
