Definitely worth speaking to somebody about. I'm in the UK too and I just spoke to my GP (about something unrelated to AS which was troubling me) and she referred me to a psychiatrist. The waiting time was about 6 to 8 weeks. When I went to see the psychiatrist she was actually the one who suggested Asperger's and she then further referred me to a specialist clinic to get an official diagnosis.

I wouldn't worry about things like life insurance, only one quarter of the UK population even have life insurance. It's seems to be mostly people who are quite well off who bother with it here, or those who get it offered through their jobs.

If you do decide to get a diagnosis, it's biggest benefit is it can help you come to terms with your own identity and how you perceive things. Also, depending on where you live in the UK, it may open up access to AS support groups in your area. I know I was lucky enough to fall into the catchment area of one such clinic and they have been amazing at helping me out with numerous things since my diagnosis.
