I grew up eating mostly super health foods because my mother was an RN. She shunned sugar & "store bought" foods. But I had all the bipolar symptoms (plus OCD & seizures)
In the 90s, my husband & I saw a PBS TV show about a high fat diet that was helping children who had terrible seizures. I had not yet been diag. w/bipolar or OCD but strongly suspected I had those. So I began not worrying about eating more fatty foods. And the seizures calmed, so did the rages that come (for me) with depression.
But it was the meds that finally worked for me. I have to eat beef at least 3X/week or I get the shakiness & anger that can lead to rage. My parents told me they noticed that in me when I was 2 years old. I'd say "I need a cheeseburger or somethin'" and they'd get me one or make me one & I'd calm down.
