I'd say that self-knowledge is invaluable and does require being able to talk through your past, but that this doesn't have to happen immediately or all at once.
If you struggle with staying stable, I would work hard on current-day, long-term stability, and when you're more comfortable with being able to maintain it, at least, enough to function, then later you can consider working through past history.
Because knowing about yourself doesn't cause more harm than good, but processing trauma is destabilizing and if you're not ready, it can hurt excessively.
