Such remarks, can be very painful to the person suffering with the disorder(s) and the family as well.
I get annoyed when hubby makes that remark to me, and yet if we are just teasing, it rolls right off my shoulders.
When I was a little girl, in 3rd grade, some kids on the playground said, "your brother is nuts, we heard he's in a mental ward", I cried all the way home, yes, it was true, he was in the hospital, in fact several times, but once the pdoc got himon the right meds for him, he got stabilized and things stayed well as long as he kept with treatment.
You need to take care of yourself, ignore their comments, even if it is difficult at times. My brother would tell whoever would make that remark, that they should go through this, the struggling, etc. and then see how it feels.
He'd then say, he didn't wish such stuff on his worst enemy.
GG, people can say things, thinking that it may be funny, not realizing or having a clue of how the other person is feeling, it's sad but true, maybe you can tell them you really do not find humour in people's suffering(s).
I wish I had a reply to your post that would be more helpful, but this is what my own feelings are.
Take care of "you", get in treatment, and the hell with those who make some remarks or inuendos.
I'm rooting for you and further progress with this.
Please, take care.
