I think most are missing the fact that he might possibly have a mental disorder (bipolar?) and just advise the OP to ditch him. (Compassion, anyone?) I'm not sure if there is much of anything you can do to help him until he realizes he has a problem and he wants help. Unfortunately, for many, this means that he will have to hit rock bottom on his own.
