I like my therapist, but I'm not a person who is quick to trust or open up to others. I had a specific issue I wanted to work on with her (not my depression...though looks like we'll be getting into that next week). It took me nearly six months of meeting with her and working through getting to know how we work together for me to finally open up to her about the original issue. We did good work on other things in the meantime, but it took me a long time to get to the point with her.

I've had other therapists in the past. One I opened up to immediately, because I was in crisis at the time. I liked working with her, and started to feel better after about 10 sessions. I could tell we were making progress, but it took time to feel it. Another therapist I saw I didn't click with (when I was still a minor), and though I continued to go to her because my mom thought it was necessary, I don't think anything actually ever improved with her.

So I think both the right relationship and giving it some time are the keys. If you're naturally an open person, you might see improvement sooner than someone like me who is pretty closed.
