Translational Psychiatry - Reversal of autism-like behaviors and metabolism in adult mice with single-dose antipurinergic therapy

So this is interesting...an already approved drug for tropical diseases seems to clear up the social interaction of mice in a sz/autism model.

Suramin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It does so after a single dose but the response is gone by five weeks. Problem is this drug can blow out adrenal/corticosteroid function so it really isn't going to be practical to use routinely but they may be able to develop something that would work similarly but be less toxic. Anyway....this is a pretty novel approach to dealing with negative symptoms. It's not clear whether this will end up working or even be an actual active mechanism in humans but it's still hope...
