Bentall is a well respected clinical psychologist and he argues that the categories of 'schizophrenia' and 'bi-polar' are not distinct (instead people have symptoms on a continuum and often exhibit features of both and as such there aren't two discrete disorders here). he offers a review (though possibly biased) of the findings that have led him to this conclusion. he also considers that symptoms (e.g., delusion, hallucination, elated mood) exist on a continuum of severity and that many people who aren't mentally ill have those experiences at times in their lives. again, a claim backed up by the data.
