I also sent a copy to our dean of students. We had a student acting peculiar in the library last semester, and I went to the dean of students to express my concern. She was aware of the situation and working with the student, who had a psychotic disorder, to help her.
I told the dean I hoped the student would be able to continue and finish her degree. She smiled, but she also looked skeptical and said that they'd had other students with a similar dx and none had been able to complete their degrees.
I really think having people around you who believe in you can make the difference. I hope the dean reads this article and realizes that recovery is a real thing and not just the fantasy of a parent of a son dx'd with sz. Because that's kind of how I felt she was thinking. "Poor deluded woman. She actually thinks her son might get well."
