I wonder if, when you were hired to work as an assistant with no access to a lot of tools and no training, there could be an expectation for you to be completely self-sufficient. Do your co-workers know and understand your position?
I think the only way you can develop a problem-solving skill set is through learning from your colleagues what you haven't already encountered in this situation. Hopefully your colleagues are understanding of this.
