I would think white noise would be something a person can get habituated to, but I'm not sure about using it for sleep. It's usually used to cover up sounds, such as in a therapist's office.

Maybe you can find something meant more for sleep. I think ocean sounds would be less grating and maybe raindrops, so they could be worth a try.
