Hi Nicole. I used to be phobic about the dentist. I have an inner ear problem that makes me extremely dizzy and nauseous when the chair gets tipped back.
When I had my wisdom teeth removed, the oral surgeon gave me liquid valium the whole time so I didn't feel any pain and I felt wonderfully calm throughout the whole procedure. If your wisdom tooth is impacted like mine were, you will probably need it surgically removed and the oral surgeon will knock you out for it.
If your wisdom tooth isn't quite so bad and can be removed during an office visit, you might consider finding a sedation dentist.
I had my first cavity a few years ago and I was terrified. I found a sedation dentist in my area, though. He specializes in treating people who have phobias about going to the dentist. You could see if there's a dentist like that in your area. When I went to this dentist, I was given a couple of valium when I first got there, and then about 30 minutes later I went in for the dental work and had nitrous oxide the whole time. I wasn't scared at all and I didn't feel nauseous or dizzy. I'm not scared of going back to him now because I know I'll feel calm when I'm there. It turns out I need drugs to handle the dentist.
Good luck! I hope you get the wisdom tooth fixed soon. It can be so painful and can lead to infection. Worrying about it just adds to your anxiety. I put off getting my wisdom teeth removed for many, many years and they ended up putting so much pressure on the rest of my teeth during all those years and they were infected and SO painful by the time I finally got up the courage to have them removed. I have very crooked teeth because I put off having my wisdom teeth removed for so long. I wish I had gone to have them removed sooner.
