All too often, when with a counselor, I was reminded of the old joke about Freud. It's said that if he would accuse someone of having issues with his father, the person might object, but Freud would then accuse the person of being in denial.

In seriousness, I think it's possible for a therapist to make suggestions and challenge your thinking, while still being aware of their own fallibility and open to hearing you out.
