The FL system is messed up. I cannot afford regular insurance through obamacare, nor do I qualify for insurance discounts through the federal government because I'm on ssdi (they don't count it as income, so I don't meet the federal minimum for the insurance help). FL does count it as income though, so I make too much to qualify for regular Medicaid within the state. I get what is called "share of cost" Medicaid because I am considered medically needy, but make too much according to the state. That roughly translates to catastrophe insurance with an enormous deductible every month. In order for them to pay anything at all, I have to run up over $1000 in medical bills each month, and even then I'm only covered for that month. I have tried talking to the state caseworker, but I am told I need to find additional coverage for myself if I want anything more reasonable. The cheapest commercial plan I can get is about $600/month, and that would come with it's own insane deductible and copays... this state really sucks for benefits. I'm still in the process of fighting the state to pay for stuff covered under my plan. They seem to pick and choose what is covered at any given time... I don't have the energy to fight them on a Neuro consult right now. I guess maybe if it continues or gets worse I will go to the er again, but at the moment it's not worth the hassle.
