I have experienced both low self-esteem and self-hatred. but, I understand it is not typical.

From what I understand from the literature... a true narcissist cannot really understand what is wrong with him, so he probably wouldn't feel depressed or have low self-esteem. Most true narcissists suffer from the delusion that being a narcissist is a good thing, and see no reason to stop their harmful behavior.
