Always, always keep your receipts. That way, when you just have to buy something, you can always take it back in the next couple days when reality of the checkbook hits.

I seldom buy anything extra anymore because I feel so guilty treating myself to anything, but I did when I was married and it drove my ex even crazier because I always took things back.
