Comfort zones can turn into danger zones, they can hold you back, and stunt your growth.
A clean break is needed, maybe in future you can go back to being friends, since there's an actual friendship in the mix but for now you too need to create some time and space between you.
I did the same with an ex of mine, we went no contact for about 4 months. The time and space helped us transition to a purely platonic friendship smoothly as it gave us both time to heal and move forward, which made adjusting to the new boundaries easier.
