In short, the Phelps gang (as I call them) are a group (mostly family) of 100+ people who are religious fundamentalists who protest the funerals of gays (at Matthew Shepard's funeral, they protested with signs saying that MS was in Hell), soldiers and others, and say that God is going to destroy America because we allow homosexuality and other "sins." They own a highly offensive domain name (besides godhatesamerica.com), which I'll post, minus the offensive word: godhates[offensive term for gay people].com.
