They do not sound like friends at all.
Assuming that the amount they borrowed was reasonable enough to return given their situation - if you know it - that isn't fair to you
especially if they were aware it was all you had.

You have every right to be upset with them for taking advantage but it was at your inconvenience that you gave them the money too.
Personally, if this has happened before, I would question why I gave them the money to begin with. You know not to do this next time...and generally with people like that there will be one...
