Mine were always about a kid who came from a family way worse than mine (so there would be clear cut bad guys, of course) and who then got adopted by a mother way more loving than mine (so there would be a clear cut good guy, of course). Interestingly, my characters were always much younger than I was at the time.

My parents weren't evil, just misguided. Sometimes I think that's even harder.
