I have no doubt the current us gov will eventually be so overrun by corporations we will have to forcibly overthrow it and start again....hopefully not in my lifetime, unfortunately to prevent that we need to keep the guns around and there are consequences for that. If there are no guns getting people to rebel is much harder although. I'm talking about the future and large scale civil war not day to day stuff....I wouldn't wave a gun anywhere near a cop or soldier unless I was part of militia but they need to have the guns in the first place. Problem is if we get rid of the guns all we have are knives vs assault rifles and helicopters/bombs etc....that's not going to work. To me this is a key element of the constitution.
Isn't Ireland or at least part of it still trying to be free from England's rule? We did that like 200 years ago thanks to guns...
So here is my thing, short term good, no guns for anyone but military, long term good guns for all. I'm in it for the long term outcome.

Firstly, I'm Irish not English. Born and bred in the Republic.
Secondly, the Queen does nothing and the UK is completely democratic. The Queen just costs the British taxpayer money and I don't agree with that.
Knife crime in the UK is very restricted to certain parts of major cities (like Glasgow in Scotland) and the stuff you hear about it is generally part of a fear campaign. There isn't an epidemic of knife crime in the UK or Ireland. Though I would generally fair much better if someone attacked me with a pocket knife than a military grade assault rifle (why are they legal?).
You can also get a hunting license and have a rifle, shotgun or handgun (if you're in a gun club for the handgun). It's just difficult to get if you're not genuinely hunting or using it for sport. Protection is not a valid claim for getting a gun.
And yes, Northern Ireland is part of the UK. After a war a man named Mick Collins went to England to negotiate a treaty for a free Ireland, unfortunately to avoid a full on war which would have resulted in major casualties he could only negotiate for 26 counties to be part of the Republic. He was the fall guy as everyone knew this was all we could get and he was assassinated by his own.
But now, sure Scotland is voting for their independence soon and there's no need for guns?
I just don't agree that fear and the 'what if?' argument is enough to justify the mass murder that is taking place in the US today. I would trust highly trained military personnel over rebels such as a rogue militia any day. I wouldn't trust either but if I had to chose.
