This is true but not specific to relationships outside marriage. In fact you can get conned MAJORLY within a marriage, and I got as well as some people I know who have posted on this thread - I won't name names for privacy reasons.
In other words, what you are saying applies to relationships in marriage, after marriage before marriage and the list goes on.
In some ways people within the marriage are more vulnerable. If you have a gf/bf whom you see once a week for a movie, walk in the park and some sex, there is not much manipulation that can be going on because of the lack of dependency-inducing factors.
