Here are some things I do. I try to keep up with the listings in a few different papers because I like random, strange (and free) events.

Visit museums/attractions/gardens
Walk/Hike/Visit parks and beaches
Attend lectures at libraries, museums, university, etc
Attend musical performances
Go to plays/readings - especially on pay-what-you-can nights.
Volunteer gardening
